The oft-maligned rear brake with integrated parking brake, made by Hayes Brake. Sold as-pictured, so make sure that the parts you'll need to transfer are still good.
You need a new one if the old one melted, and your old one melted for one or more of these reasons:
- The parking brake was properly adjusted and you accidentally rode with it deployed
- You accidentally rested your toe on the brake pedal, just enough to prevent the master cylinder's relief port from functioning. Heat built up in the brake hydraulics, adding pressure to the pads, adding heat, adding pressure... bam.
- Someone (maybe not you!) adjusted the master cylinder pushrod improperly, resulting in the same thing described above. It needs to have some freeplay before the rod touches the master cylinder's piston.
By the way besides seeing the caliper itself partially melted, we've seen the brake hose get so hot it sealed itself shut internally. So if you have trouble bleeding the new brake, see if the brake hose is actually letting through.
Of course you'll also want new brake pads and possibly a new brake rotor. If the rotor is rainbow-colored, it's telling you it got too hot. Maybe you break the glaze by having someone turn the rotor on a lathe, or with sandpaper, or with a brake hone. But replacing it's easier and more effective.
